A Leading Perspective

Pragmatic insights for the leader in you

What the…Was That a Unicorn?

“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”

Winston Churchill

Did you ever have one of those days in which everything was going your way?

I had a week like that – an entire week! It was quite delightful.

I can’t put my finger on exactly what went right. Moreover, it’s not like things didn’t go wrong because plenty of things did go wrong indeed.

Nonetheless, it was a fantastic week and I find myself looking forward to another one.

Attitude, folks, it’s all in the attitude.

bad moodLet’s see, for the past month or so, I’ve been cynical, I’ve been frustrated, I’ve been discouraged and I’ve been depressed.

And, for the past month or so, I’ve grown so tired of those emotions! By the way, so did my kids, my friends, my neighbors and my colleagues.

My mentor suggested I make a quick list of my emotions, so I did.

Then he told me to write down what caused those emotions, so I did.

Then he told me to honestly identify what, if anything, I could control about what CAUSED the emotions, and I tried.

My dear, wise mentor just sat there and smiled.

Wait for it…

I cannot control the CAUSE!

I can, however, control the emotion that results.

So, last week, I did.
I chose appreciation over cynicism.
I chose patience over frustration.
I chose hope over discouragement.
I chose joy over depression.

Unicorns are everywhere, folks,
IF WE CHOOSE to see them.
