Heather - thanks for your thoughtful, well-done guide to help HR professionals in preparing for a situation that WILL occur at some point in every workplace. Grief is a huge issue for all of us in Alaska...with our high rates of accidental, recreational and occupational deaths, and our terrible suicide rate, it is important to be knowledgeable and sensitive to the grief process. In terms of professional help, do not underestimate the support available to HR and to impacted employees by your EAP. A contact with your EAP professionals can be one of the best first steps you take in managing grief in the workplace, no matter what type of loss it is. Thanks for addressing this.

Joel, thanks for your kind words. Yes indeed, that was the lesson I learned...perhaps by 'faking' that I was above mistake/failure, I have not allowed my staff to be human. Epic failure as a leader...and I'm committed to being better than that!

Not that you intended this but it's refreshing and encouraging to hear that even well-intentioned, smart, professional people make mistakes and more importantly, are committed to learning and evolving. That leaves room for the rest of us to be human too. Thanks for sharing this, Heather!
